What’s on in Dornoch: March 2019

What's On This Month?

After an unseasonably mild February we are looking forward to more sunshine and Spring weather in March. The snow drops are in full bloom and the daffodils are nearly there- Roll on Spring!

Our five-star museum - Historylinks - opens daily 10-4 for the season from April 1 until October 31.

This month sees one of the Dornoch calender's highlights- FibreFest 8-10 March - when we welcome all those interested in wool, fabric and craft work. The opening talk on Friday 8th is “Fair Isle Knitting then and now” by Janette Budge a native Shetlander who will talk about how the designs have changed through the decades and how her family knitting heritage fits into the picture. The main events are on Saturday & Sunday including Master Classes in beautiful brioche, Dorset buttons,  Fair Isle yokes, and Dresden Plate patchwork and Learning Techniques classes in needlefelt, tapestry crochet, beginners Fair Isle and felting, and Learn to Knit classes. There are also drop-in sessions in stitch and craft.

Don't forget Mother's Day  on March 31 with a gift of jewellery from Jail Dornoch, candles from Coast Candle Co, chocolates from Cocoa Mountain or her favourite tipple from the Carnegie Whisky Cellars

Take a look at our 'What's On' Calendar here to discover some fantastic events taking place across the Northern Highlands in March.

Royal Dornoch voted 2nd in the World’s Top 100 Golf Courses

Golfscape have voted the Royal Dornoch Golf Club as 2nd in the World’s Top 100 Golf Courses, 2019.

The ranking features only the top golf courses worldwide that are unique, memorable and luxurious.

They describe the Royal Dornoch as:

" a spellbinding golf club and many golfers from all over the world make the pilgrimage to the natural links at some point in their lives. It’s wild, isolated, and at the same time, absolutely beautiful. There is also a blaze of color in early summer when the gorse is in flower. Raised or sloping greens are a characteristic of the Championship Course, as well as elevated tees so the target is well presented although rarely easy to reach."

Golf was first played on the Dornoch links nearly 400 years ago and has been an integral part of the life and economy of the town ever since. A visit to the Golf Club, whether to play or just enjoy the food and stunning views, is a unique experience that combines high quality produce and service with a relaxed and friendly environment.

Dornoch Fibre Fest’s 10 year Anniversary!

Fibre Fest takes place this year from the 8th to the 10th of March in the Dornoch Social Club and West Church Hall

This exciting event, held in mid-March each year, has become a favourite in the Dornoch Calendar and is an opportunity for you to immerse yourself in all things fibre. Fibre Fest, run by an enthusiastic group of local fibre artists, has now been running for 10 years and this year will be bigger and bigger than ever!

Spinning, weaving, patchwork and feltmaking; all these feature regularly either as Masterclasses or drop-in demonstrations where you can try new skills. And of course it provides a great opportunity to browse the market area where you can buy those essential additions absolutely necessary to any serious fibre worker’s stash. This year there will be tutors and traders from all over Scotland and the North of England, and classes will be taking place in knitting, crochet, needlefelting and wet felting, patchwork and Dorset Buttons. Classes are available for beginners and those with a little more experience, and in addition adults and children have the opportunity to Learn to Knit for free with experienced knitting tutor Katherine Lymer, with wool kindly donated by Rowan.

Book onto a class or pop by and get involved in the drop-in sessions which are free to everyone.

The Stash Buster is a great way to declutter your stash of crafting materials (Fabric, wool, haberdashery & equipment) at the stall in the Dornoch Social Club over the weekend.
Turn your excess into cash whilst supporting the ongoing success of Fibre Fest (10% of each sale goes to DADCA). Download a form and complete before entering your materials.

Friday 8th March 6.30pm
Gala Opening Talk at St Finnbarr’s Church. £5 entry includes super.
'Fair Isle Knitting then and now' by Janette Budge. The talk will be followed by a soup and cheese supper in the Dornoch Social Club
