What’s on in Dornoch: December 2018

December is packed full of fantastic events taking place in and around Dornoch.

Christmas fairs, pantomimes, dinners, cake decorating and ceilidhs. Winter in Dornoch is certainly not a quiet month- there is so much on for everyone to enjoy!

St Andrew’s fair Christmas shopping event!

St Andrew's Fair festive shopping event!

Every year Dornoch begin's gearing up for Christmas in earnest at it's annual Christmas Bazaar, the St Andrew's fair. This year it will be held on Saturday 1st December 2018. All the shops and restaurants take part in this event and Dornoch has a real Christmas buzz. The Christmas lights go on for the first time, Santa is in his grotto and there are craft stalls to complement the local shops for those special Christmas gifts.

The Social Club on School Hill hosts the Christmas Bazaar from 10am - 4 pm with craft stalls full of Christmas gifts for all the family. Bacon rolls, home baking, tea, coffee and home made soup are available all day. Santa arrives at 1pm and is in his grotto until 3pm.

Throughout the town you can buy raffle tickets to have a chance of winning a Christmas Hamper (with goods donated by local businesses). Shops will have special offers and tastings, seasonal food and drink to get you in the festive spirit.

There is a Carol Service in the Cathedral at 3:30pm followed by mulled wine and mince pies. To contact the organisers click here

During the 2 days before the fair we will be having a festive shopping event where many shops and cafes will be getting in the festive spirit with offers and events. See below for some of the events which will be taking place around the town.

 

Grace Cafe

An exciting new event is taking place at Grace of Dornoch Cafe. Their Pop up suppers start on the 23rd November and will be running during our festive weekend starting next week (30th November & 1st December) Start planning your Christmas food with their great selection of Orkney sourced items including Westray cheeses, smoked salmon and olives as well as a large range of beremeal biscuits and caithness cakes and buns.

Simply the Best

Christmas music will be playing whilst you browse the competitively prices toys just itching to be bought for Christmas. Buy yourself a CD of Christmas music from around the world or make the most of some fantastic deals- 30% off scarves and 40% off jewellery.

Coast Candle

Coast Candle Co. will be welcoming you on the 1st December with some warming spicy, mulled wine, homemade tablet and chocolates. They have a great offer running where you will be gifted a Christmas scented wax melt with every purchase giving you 10% off any purchase on the day!

Cocoa Mountain

Cocoa Mountain will be running a number of chocolate bar making workshops in the run up to Christmas. They will also be offering product tastings and taking advance orders for fresh chocolates. Dates TBC

Dornoch Castle Hotel

The Castle will be getting in the Christmas mood with Teas, Coffees, Hot Chocolate available all evening in the bar with the fire lit. There will be an Early Bar Supper menu available 5.30-7.00 and A La Carte Dining available 7-8.30. ‘The Vault’ set for Festive menu event and open to the public to view

Barnowl Bothy

Barn Owl Bothy has now more new and exciting giftware and art arriving daily and over the Christmas shopping event (and then onwards in the run up to Christmas)  there will be a Daily Special Offer.  None of the goods in this wonderful shop are mass produced, everything is lovingly created by hand by some very talented artisans.

Get in the mood for Christmas with two of our most loved festive events!

Christmas Community Market. Tuesday 18th December

Throughout the summer our community markets delight visitors with their wonderful friendly buzz and their fantastic range of stalls. Our Christmas version brings all that and more (albeit under cover in the Social Club (it is December in Scotland afterall!) Join us at this popular event and stock up on tasty treats for the festive period and those all important last minute gifts!

The doors open at 9:30 am and the market runs until 1:30 pm. Don't miss your favourite stalls including arts & crafts, produce, baking, cheese, organic pork and fresh fish.

The community cafe will be open for tea & coffee, so make a morning of it come and do some Christmas food and present shopping in comfort and support local producers from across the Northern Highlands.

Hogmanay 2018- The latest updates!

About Hogmanay and New Year

Welcome in the New Year in Dornoch!

Join the crowd for the Hogmanay Street Party in the Square. We are delighted that Tesco Bags of Help are supporting the event this year. The evening starts off with the 3 Musicteers playing under the arches from  9:30 – 10:00 followed by the mini pipe band from 10:10 -10:30 when the Red Reel Ceilidh Band take over and the dancing starts! Mackays will be cooking up a storm with their Dornoch Farm Butcher burgers and Cocoa Mountain will keep you warm with hot chocolate. Or if gin is your tipple, check out the pop-up bar in the Castle Hotel garden.

At midnight Magnus Orr will pipe in the New Year from the Castle battlements and then there will be a superb Firework display to light up the night sky.  Then it is time for Auld Lang Syne before the dancing resumes until 1:30am.

Take a dip on the 1st

Join the crowd at the Loony Dook on New Year’s Day down at the beach – and if you are one of the brave ones, have a quick dip! Porridge, soup and hot chocolate will be available to warm you up.

Eat, drink & be merry

Hogmanay dinners, first foot breakfast, New Year’s lunch, whisky tasting and much more. Full programme to follow.

Dornoch’s Hogmanay Celebrations 2018

What are your plans for Hogmanay this year? If you are looking for a traditional Scottish experience than look no further than Dornoch. With our Street Party, 2 Ceilidhs to choose from and a Piper playing at Midnight from the ramparts of the Castle Hotel followed by an incredible fireworks display- If it's an atmospheric experience you are looking for then this is the place to be!

It isn't just New Year's Eve itself that we have covered. Enjoy 3 full days of events including the annual Loony Dook, Whisky Tasting, Music, very special dinners and much more! Dornoch's New Year celebrations are the perfect mix of dancing, partying, great food and brisk, or leisurely, walks along the beach and family fun and entertainment to please everyone- throughout this long weekend there will be fun, laughter, entertainment and time to unwind by the fire or with a brisk walk on the beach.

The 31st December has a range of events and activities leading up to the Street Party. Look out for the Labyrinth in Dornoch Cathedral for a moment of quiet in the excitement of the day or treat yourself to a special dinner in one of our many wonderful hotels or restaurants. Or if you want to learn ceilidh dance steps, you are welcome to join the Social Dancers’ annual party held in the Social Club from 8pm.

New Year’s Day might well start with a hearty breakfast to fuel a day which could include a dip in the sea at noon. Perhaps you will then be ready for a ‘First Footing’ New Year’s lunch at Links House, or visit Cocoa Mountain for their hot chocolate hangover cure! There will be further celebrations on the 2nd of January too so make the most of your trip and have a proper winter break here in Dornoch this New Year!
