Your Summer Break in Dornoch

Even though it is only the end of April, we have already had a taste of some glorious weather. Let's hope there is plenty more to come! It has definitely left us dreaming of long summer days and beautiful light evenings- loads of time to fill with all the fantastic events Dornoch has to offer this year.

f you are planning your summer break in Dornoch then take a look below at some of the highlights taking place in and around Dornoch over the next few months.

Dornoch Pipe Band

Every Saturday night during the summer you can watch the Pipe Band Parades (followed by highland dancing display) in the Square at 8pm.

Dornoch Gallery

The annual Dornoch Gallery Summer Exhibition runs 8th until 22nd June in the Social Club.

Community Markets

The ever popular Community Markets take place on the Cathedral green throughout the summer months. Community Market days for 2019 are 8th May, 12th June, 26th June, 10th July, 24th July, 14th August, 28th August and 11th September and the markets run from 9:30 am to 1 pm. Come and browse up to 30 stalls with homegrown produce, plants, arts & crafts, baking, artisan bread, specialist chocolates, cheese, handmade cosmetics,  jewellery, gifts & clothing.

Sutherland County Show

This year the County Show is to be held on Dornoch Links on the 20th July. The Show is a spectacle with a whole range of attractions and entertainments for the whole family. The heart of the Show is the Livestock Section which showcases the excellent cattle, sheep, goats, horses and ponies from across the Highlands. A Food Fair, Fun Fair, dog show, vintage vehicle exhibition, terrier racing, pipe band, children’s races, horses and ponies, flower show and spectacular main ring events combine to make a memorable day which is rounded off with the marquee dance.

Dornoch Highland Gathering

The Dornoch Highland Gathering will take place this year on Friday 2nd August. It is a day that locals look forward to all year, where everyone can have fun. Visitors are very welcome. Come and enjoy the competitions for piping, Highland dancing, tossing the caber, putting the ball and throwing the hammer. Watch, or take part in, the track & field events of running, cycling, long jump and high jump. With fairground attractions, stalls and refreshments, children’s races and mini Highland games, this is a day out for all the family.

Dornoch Festival Week

Dornoch Festival Week runs from 4th to the 10th of August and has a packed programme of family activities including sandcastle competition, children’s fancy dress, children’s sports, family quiz night, car treasure hunt, ceilidh tea dance, pipe band parade, bingo, 5 -a -side football, golf competitions, films, and a teddy bear’s picnic!

Dornoch Gallery 2019

The Dornoch Gallery holds a Summer Exhibition in Dornoch Social Club, with a wide and exciting range of work, designed and made in the Highlands by local artists and craftsmen, on show and for sale. This includes handbags, hand smocked children’s clothes, stained glass, jewellery, paintings, drawings, etchings, batik, ceramics, painted silk, hand knits & weaves, photography and textiles. It takes place in June from 10am until 4pm in the Struie Room in the Dornoch Social Club. Dates for 2019 are the 8th to the 22nd.

What’s on in Dornoch: May 2019

May in Dornoch is full of sunshine and gorse bushes in full bloom, alfresco eating and long warm evening walks on the beach. Take a look at our What's on in Dornoch for May to see all the fantastic events taking place this month. See the full list here.

Our highlights this month include:

East Sutherland Rotary Classic Car Tour takes place on Saturday 18th May, cars gather in Dornoch Square from 8:30 am ready for a 9:30 start, allowing locals and visitors to inspect the cars before waving them on their way.

Gnoss are a dynamic four-piece of fiddle, flute, guitar and percussion, that tackle energetic tune sets
and driving folk song. They will be in Bonar Bridge Hall on Wednesday 22nd May at 7.30pm

And last but CERTAINLY not least, the Dornoch Pipe Band Parade is back for another season! Starting on Saturday 25th May at 8pm in the Dornoch Square, the parade is followed by a Highland dancing display- an evening not to be missed!

East Sutherland Rotary Classic Car Tour

Saturday 18th May 2019

The Royal Burgh of Dornoch Cathedral, Castle, Jail and Court House form the backdrop for the start of our 5th tour. The circular route from Dornoch to Ullapool via Muir of Ord takes in the majestic scenery of the west coast. A traditional Highland Ceilidh rounds off the day. The tour is restricted to 60 cars, so book now to avoid disappointment.

Cars gather in Dornoch Square from 8:30 am ready for a 9:30 start, allowing locals and visitors to inspect the cars before waving them on their way.

No entry fee is charged, but drivers and their sponsors raise over £12,000 for RNLI and other charities supported by Rotary Club of East Sutherland Trust Fund (Scottish Charity No. 044261).

Dornoch Community Markets 2019

Dornoch Community Markets

These popular markets take place from May-September

Regular Community Market days for 2017 are Wednesdays 8th May, 12th and 26th June, 10th and 24th July, 14th and 28th August and 11th September.

The markets runs from 9:30am to 1pm on the Cathedral Green. Come and browse up to 30 stalls with home grown local produce, plants, arts & crafts, baking, artisan bread, specialist chocolates, cheese, hand made cosmetics,  jewellery, gifts & clothing.

Featuring:

  • Artisan bread from Cromarty Bakery: The Cromarty Bakery have a reputation for first class bread, cakes and pastries.
  • Chocolate from Highland Patissier and Cocoa Skye
  • Cromarty Cheese: The Cheese House is renowned for doing things a bit differently. Expect the best locally produced cheeses, chutneys and mouth-watering tasty bites. And also find a strong link with the Netherlands – some of the best Dutch farmer’s cheeses, finest charcuterie and quality snacks.
  • Knockfarrel Produce: Knockfarrel Produce is a small family run organic croft nestled beneath the iron age hill fort of Knockfarrel in Cromarty.  They grow fresh healthy food for local customers within 30 miles of their croft.
  • Corry Croft Nursery : The nursery specialises in grasses and hardy plants. There is also a growing range of bamboos and exotic plants, offered for those who relish something more unusual. All plants offered for sale are propagated at the nursery in Rogart. All hardy plants are grown onsite and are therefore known to cope with the climate and conditions prevalent in this part of Scotland.

What’s on in Dornoch: April 2019

Take a look at our ‘What’s On’ Calendar here to discover some fantastic events taking place across the Northern Highlands in April.

British Summer Time starts on 31st March, so the longer nights stretch before us. The birds are singing in the trees, the lambs are skipping in the fields and the road sides are full of daffodils. Hooray!

If you are visiting Dornoch with the family, then get a visitors’ pass for the day to Grannie’s Heilan’ Hame and enjoy the leisure facilities there.  Are you looking for something for the children to do over the Easter break? There are Easter base camps being run in Aldie Burn by Go Wild Highland and a range of activities taking place at the Kyle of Sutherland Hub in Bonar Bridge. Historylinks Museum has loads to do for children and adults alike and is open daily from 10-4.

Our cafes are waiting to tempt you with home baking and speciality teas and coffees – check out the Courthouse CafĂ©Gordon House  and Harry Gow  – not forgetting to sample the best hot chocolate in the world at Cocoa Mountain.
